Acton area guide

Acton is a rather large area within the West London Borough of Ealing. Over recent years, it’s become increasingly popular with families and has undergone a major revamp. Whilst the area is mostly residential, there are plenty of attractions, restaurants and shops to keep you and the kids busy at the weekends.

Acton Tube mapTransport

Commuters will be pleased to hear that Acton is not short on Tube stations. Acton Town has links to the Piccadilly and District lines, whereas West Acton, North Acton and East Acton are all connected to the Central line. If it’s the Overground service you require, you’ll need to use either South Acton or Acton Central. Acton Main Line railway station also has trains to Paddington, which is just a nine-minute journey away.

With Acton Mainline Crossrail station due to open in 2019 the transport network continues to improve in the area.

Shopping and eating out

For your day-to-day food shopping, Acton has a large Morrisons supermarket, but it’s also worth checking out the local market stalls. Acton Town Centre Market runs from Wednesday to Saturday, with up to 30 stalls each day. Depending on the day, you can grab all sorts here, from artisan breads and fresh meat, to fashionable clothing and hand-crafted items.

Churchfield Road has some great independent stores and cafes – there are two gastro pubs, several bakeries, a gift shop, florist, and a wine bar among other things. If you want a coffee with a friend or a pub lunch with the family, it’s the ideal place to go.

One of the best pubs in town is The Aeronaut. Not only does it make its own beer, it also has a circus room, where you can watch amazing acts whilst munching on some tasty grub. If acrobatics isn’t your thing, the comedy nights may be more up your street. You can expect to see some well-known comedians perform here; past names include Sara Pascoe and Matt Richardson.

The majority of schools in Acton have a positive Ofsted rating of ‘Good’, and a couple have achieved the top grade of ‘Outstanding’. Berrymede Junior School, which is a seven-minute walk from Acton Town Station, is one of the schools catering for younger children classed as Outstanding.

There are three comprehensive schools in Acton: Twyford Church of England High School is ‘Outstanding’ and Acton High and the Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls are both rated as ‘Good’. If your children aspire to work on the stage, there are two performing arts schools in the area too.

Thanks to its diverse community, Acton has a number of schools catering for different cultures, including The Japanese School, The King Fahad Academy and The Greek Primary School.

Acton Town HallLeisure and entertainment

London office workers who spend every weekday sat at a desk needn’t worry, as the Everyone Active Acton Centre has great gym facilities. In fact, it boasts 100 exercise equipment stations, a dance studio and two swimming pools. However, it doesn’t really cater all that well to families. The Park Club, a private health and sports club, is more suitable in that regard; it has an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool, as well as a tennis court and gym.

If it’s green space you crave then Acton Park has you covered. There’s a playground for the kids, a bowling green for the adults, and much more. It also has its own café – perfect for the days when you forget your picnic. Acton Carnival takes place in the park every July; it’s a great opportunity to get to know your neighbours, listen to live music and see some amazing costumes. This annual event is not to be missed.

Of course, a big part of Acton’s appeal is the fact it’s so close to the rest of London. There’s a huge number of world-famous attractions just a short Tube ride away, including the Hammersmith Apollo and Kew Gardens.

Acton really is the ideal London location for families. If you’d like to know more, come visit us at our Shepherd’s Bush office, or call us on 020 8222 6050.
